Here is what I believe they all have in common: Conceal
Conceal is defined in the dictionary as:
1. to hide; withdraw or remove from observation; cover or keep from sight
2. to keep secret; to prevent or avoid disclosing or divulging
Each of these cards has a hidden meaning or implies that not is all as it seems, beckoning us to seek and search.
The High Priestess sits between two pillars with a veil draped between the two in a lot of decks. It is commonly accepted that behind the veil are the steps that lead to the underworld. The High Priestess marries with Persephone in Ancient Greek Mythology who is the wife of Hades and queen of the underworld. She sits between ‘black’ and ‘white’, shadow and light and holds a scroll of universal secrets on her lap. She is the archetype who asks us to question, to look deeper, to seek spiritually and understand that life is not black and white. She is also the matriarch in spiritual leadership, partnered with the High Priest. She does not share the secrets to everyone and this card often appears in spreads where people are undergoing spiritual and esoteric learning. She is also the keeper of the veil between the worlds.
The Hermit stands illuminating the path for those who wish to follow within to find the truth of being. He acknowledges that truth of who we are and our place in the universe can only be found within. This is the hardest thing for some people to do, to look within and shine a light on their shadow selves and live with awareness. The Hermit is often found in readings when the person is being asked to withdraw from a situation or from life for a time and spend their energy being still and listening the the whispers within.
The Tower can be a very confronting card for most people who take the card on face value with the lightening struck tower and the destruction it causes. I won’t lie the Tower is one force of a card. The Tower is sudden, unexpected and often out of our control. Change comes forcing one to re-evaluate and start back at the foundations. This card asks if your Tower was really a sandcastle? Experiences of swift change and challenge force people to really see what they are made of, can they dig in and ride the storm, learn the lesson and move on or do they dwell and blame others getting buried beneath the rubble. The Tower presents us with an opportunity to start again and to gain a deeper understanding of what shapes us and why we make the choices we do?
This is what I get from these cards and their similar associations, look closer and dig deeper.
Until Next time...
