When cards fall out of a deck when shuffling

When cards fall out of a deck when shuffling

What it means when a card falls out or jumps out of a deck when you are shuffling the cards and how I interpret it.

It’s Tarot Cafe day!

Whoop! Whoop!

It has happened to us all as Tarot readers, collectors or enthusiasts: we are conducting or getting a reading and, while shuffling our little hearts out, a card (or three) leaps out of the deck and onto the table (or floor if you are lucky like me).

So what do you do when this happens? This is our topic for the Tarot Cafe video today.

There is a Video Transcription Below for those of you who would rather read or can’t watch the video right now.

In today’s episode, I discuss what does it mean when a card falls out or jumps out of a deck when you are shuffling the cards?

When we talk about cards falling out or jumping out of the deck it means when someone is shuffling the cards, a card may fall out of the shuffler’s hands onto the table or sometimes the ground. Sometimes the cards can appear to leap out of the deck because some people shuffle very quickly.

So does it mean anything when this happens?

It really depends on if you give it meaning.

Just like a lot in sacred practice, this is something that only has meaning if you believe it does.

I know fellow readers who always pull these cards aside as read with the intention that they have extra weight in a reading.

I know other readers who, like me, don’t. In my personal reading practice, if one card does a flip where it gets caught and turns around or falls into my reading table I will take note to see if it comes up again in the reading. This is more out of curiosity than anything else.

The reason I do this is because there are usually a lot of cards to manage when you are shuffling a tarot deck.

I, for one, am a pretty clumsy person and my shuffling game is either madly on point or a hot friggin’ mess. If I looked at all the cards as a sign from my guides that there is special meaning that 6 cards fell on the floor I could be there all freaking day!

I also truly believe from years of reading that what’s for you won’t miss you so you will totally get the message you were meant to in your reading.

Whether you choose to view cards falling out as a sign or if you just take a quick glance and pop them back into the deck is completely up to you. Hey, you may have an agreement with your guides to do that while you are conducting a reading.

That is the cool thing with being your own Tarot or Oracle reader. Like everything, you just gotta do you.

What do you think? Do you give this meaning in your readings?

Until Next time...

  1. Hello! When multiple cards fall out at once, I don’t really take that as a message since I’m pretty clumsy at shuffling myself. But, I try to pay attention when it’s just one card that flips up or falls out on its own. Now, I was hoping to get your opinion on something. I tried looking it up but didn’t come up with any results. While I was doing readings earlier, I had something strange happen. A card fell out, though that’s not the unusual part. I looked at the card, and it was a wand card. I read the meaning and put it back, and continued to shuffle. Then, another card fell out. And, it was another wand card. I put it back, after reading the meaning, and continued to shuffle. This process continued a few more times, and by the end of it I was pretty sure each card in the wand suit had taken its turn jumping out of my deck while I was shuffling. I’m not really sure what this means, but it feels important. If you can help, that’d be greatly appreciated. Oh, and this whole incident of wands taking turns falling out didn’t happen while shuffling for just one reading, it was a span over two or three.

    1. I just started using tarot cards it’s been 4 days since I’ve gotten them and each day I get the same cards that jump out no matter how slowly I shuffle or tightly I hold them. But they all are major arcana cards. It’s making me nervous. Am I worried for nothing?

    2. Just an odd question i play cards with my friend and evey time i play cards the number 10 falls out once when i shuffle the cards in about 50 percent of the games we play, this is starting to get a bit very strange, cannot link 10 to anything ,sometimes this sounds silly the cards feel as if they are doing what i want and fel different in my hand ?

Everything’s a sign. (Jadorowsky?) I call single cards that jump out “wild hares.” In a proper Tarot reading, there’s a “field” within which everything has a meaning, like in a dream. If the power goes out in a reading, or your cat throws up on your Hello Kitty deck, that’s part of it and has a meaning. Overhand shuffling is better, in my opinion, since riffling is… well, among other things more likely to produce the kind of spectacular eruptions that are just embarrassing. (Plus stiff cards are really hard to riffle.)

If a bunch of cards jump out, yeah, that’s clumsiy shuffling.

    1. I have a general ‘rule’ that if s jumper is meant to be considered, it has to fall onto the space where I’m laying out my cards. Not on my lap, not on the floor, and not if I catch it. That keeps me from too much overthinking.

    2. I actually use them for my readings, I shuffle my deck until a card Falls out and di thqt 3 times, if multiple cards fall out at once i mix them up and pull one, am i doing it completely wrong or is it okay like that? I just started rading tarot cards.

  3. I did my usual 3 card reading this morning. Got 2 of cups, Princess of Wands, Fortune. At 8:45 pm tonight was shuffling again, randomly not really focused on anything in particular and the exact 3 cards popped out….one at a time, same exact order. That is no coincidence! I am still trying to process it.

  4. I was shuffling for my card for the day, just a standard rider Waite deck I recently got sent to me by a great friend of mine, & the knight of wands jumped out while shuffling the deck. My boyfriend was next to me and it’s our 6 year anniversary, plus my second nephew was born today, September 20, 2019. It’s 4:36pm east coast time. Idk why I felt the need to put all of that but I agree with the gentleman above who said that everything has a meaning. I mainly commented because the other woman above said about the wands so I felt the need to comment and see what happens when cards just “pop” out of the deck. ? I know it has to have a special meaning plus I know you can’t really go wrong with pulling wands imo. Basically I’m asking if you could further explain more on this topic. It’s fascinating to me and I’ve always been super drawn to crystals and tarot and I use stones in my readings for myself and for friends. I’ve never read for a stranger or neighbor or, anyone else yet but I hope to get to that point some day lol happy readings friends! : )
Sending all my love and vibes to you all from Pittsburgh PA.,

The death card flew out at me…not 15 mins later cops were at my door to arrest me…for a warrent…but i wasnt at my place of residence

  6. I’ve been having a lot of wands in my readings and generally positive cards that I can relate to things happening in my life at the moment. When shuffling, the Tower jumped out of the pack. I am about to embark on some big changes in my life and that card is incongruent to other messages I’ve had. It un-nerved me. However, when I chose a card I was drawn to straight after….another wand card that I could relate to.
Perhaps the Tower jumped out because it should not be picked by me, so was removing itself! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

  7. I only counted if it’s a single card and I didn’t notice it fell out the deck for example when shuffling for my own reading I noticed a card was laying on the table but I did not notice when it fell out of the deck the thing I was thinking of just before turning the card over the car directly reflect it exactly what I was thinking concerning a job so I took it in account. But if the card was something unrelated I would look for it again when I do my reading

  8. I’ve always been a very spiritual person, I recently received 2 sets of cards one being witches tarot the other vintage wisdom oracle cards

I’m looking for pointers do’s and fonts from someone who’s more experienced please.

  9. I pay attention when cards fall. I find whether one or more then 1 when doing a reading they always contribute something important (especially now that I use a mini deck instead of the regular sized ones).

The minis fit my hands better and I can tell it’s not falling from me being clumsy now that I use mini decks.

When I used to used normal sized decks though, I didn’t use the fallen cards because I found the cards too hard to manage and shuffle so that I couldn’t tell if they were falling from my clumsiness or falling to emphasize a point in the reading (I have small hands).

Using mini decks I have no troubles holding the deck and no troubles shuffling so now I definitely use dropped cards in my readings.

  10. I did my sister’s reading and the two of swords flew out of deck as I let her shuffle with a fist of wind landed on ground reversed. I told her to put it back I deck shuffle again. I was doing past, present future. And the first card I flipped was two of swords reversed. Ment to be I guess.

  11. I was doing a reading for myself using 3 of my tarot/oracle decks that I use most for a weekly reading and while I was shuffling the first deck I had a card pop out of the deck seemingly out of nowhere and landed face up on the floor by my feet. I quickly read the meaning, it was Four of Pentacles, A card I’ve never pulled before. I continued on to the other two decks doing the same deck attunement and lo and behold the deck for future(3rd card) was the Four of Pentacles from another deck. It was also 1:11 when it happened. Really not sure what to do with that.

  12. Personally, I vary every time. I go by my 1st instinct feels when jumpers happen. Sometimes they will be incorporated as specials or extra info in last card, and others it is a message that card doesn’t belong in the deck for this spread. I like the freedom of no rules
