What is the best way to start when it comes to reading cards? Do you begin with an oracle deck or do you dive right into the Tarot? Today, I’m going to share my thoughts on this topic with you. So let’s break it down with a straightforward answer. No system is better than the other – you can start with whatever you want. It really boils down to these three points:
- What you have access to or are first exposed to.
- What you are drawn to.
- What kind of reader you want to be.
Remember, as with everything that I share, simply take what resonates with you and leave the rest. Important note before you dive in; if you’re not sure what the difference is between Tarot and oracle decks, please go and check out my video on that subject so that you are informed before we move ahead.
What you have access to or are first exposed to
Some people will be given an oracle deck by a friend, and that will be the first cartomancy system they are introduced to; naturally, they start to read with oracle decks. Some people receive a Tarot reading and are transfixed; they’ll go out and buy a tarot deck and start with that. The bottom line is that whatever system you’re first introduced to will play a part in what you choose.
You may live in an area where there aren’t many options for new-age shops, so you start using a pack of playing cards. Tools, including decks, are an extension of the person using them; they become special because the user is special.
What you are drawn to
You may have stumbled upon a deck while scrolling through Instagram and fell immediately in love. It has happened to me many a time. Who cares if it is an oracle or tarot deck? What matters is that you have been drawn to it.
I always say, work with the deck that is calling and connecting with you. Good decks help unlock your intuition and get you in touch with your ‘clairs’ and help you do the work you want to do in the world. We all have different tastes and will resonate with different creators and systems.
What kind of reader you want to be
Do you feel like you want to read more intuitively and free flow, or do you want more structure? Do you want to learn a system that will enable you to put other magical systems on top of them? Tarot is often connected to astrology, numerology, and the kabbalah, for example. Do you want to pick any deck and just read with it using your intuition only, regardless if it’s a Tarot or oracle deck? All of these things can help you when it comes to learning new things.
I started with the Tarot; it was what I was first introduced to, so it is where I started. I got into oracle decks later on. Many people find that oracle decks are more gentle and more accepting because they don’t have so much stigma attached to them, and there aren’t ‘scary’ titles like The Devil. This is a totally legit reason for some people to start with Oracle decks.
I hope this information helps and that no matter what you choose to work with you enjoy it immensely.
