Witches love crystals. So do many mystical babes.

They are so darn pretty.

I often get asked how I use crystals in my tarot readings, so today I am going to share some of my favorite crystals to use with the Tarot. As with everything that I share, take what resonates with you and leave the rest.

While I have a sizeable collection, you do not have to have all of the stones.  I know it can feel that way (boy are they shiny) but you do not need a mountain of crystals to be an amazing tarot reader or a spiritual person.

The stones that you use also do not have to be the size of Mount Vesuvius. (Also, have you ever had to move boxes of crystals? I have and I’m surprised that my friends and family still talk to me after helping move my books and crystals.)

The stones on this list are usually easily available and not super expensive specimens (I don’t spend thousands on crystals, you don’t need to either).

So with that, let’s get to The Top 10 Crystals for Enhancing your Tarot Reading…

To see the stones up close and personal, be sure to watch the video.

1. Amethyst

Amethyst is a wonderful all round crystal for any energy worker as it elevates energy and raises vibrational frequencies. It can aid the user to connect to other planes, which is perfect for mediums, intuitive readers and channelers. Purple is also my favorite color and I have always been attracted to this stone.

2. Clear Quartz

This is such a versatile stone and one of my favorite crystals. It is wonderful to help magnify energy and help clear your mind of anything distracting in your readings. It can help you bring focus to your readings and help you direct the energy you want for your readings.

3. Smokey Quartz

A stone of protection, which is lovely to have with you in your Tarot Reading space. It has been said to aid the energy centred in the solar plexus and the hands and feet. Perfect for card readers, using their hands and grounding with feet on Gaia. With the ability to remove negative energy and blocks, it is wonderful to use with your clients.

4. Garnet

When I wear or hold garnet, I immediately feel like I am wearing an extra layer of energetic armour and I also feel wonderfully grounded. It is terrific for clearing out icky energy from chakra centers, which is one of the reasons I always wear it while I am doing in person readings. Being an empath, as I am, I don’t want any hijacking unwanted energies following me home. It allows for your energy to flow and can aid in expanding awareness.

5. Black Tourmaline

Is any witches crystal collection complete without black tourmaline? I see this stone as a warrior guardian and I have a lot of it. It is well known to protect you from the negative energies of others and actively repels nasties. I also adore the brown tourmaline and have a number of those as well.

6. Citrine

I flipping love this stone. It is really a joy stone. This crystal is special, it is rare as it is unable to store negative energy. It simply transmutes it. What does this mean? It means that you don’t have to cleanse it like you would other stones. I have a piece of this magical stone in my purse for it’s abundance manifestation abilities and it brings such a lovely sunshine energy to a space.

7. Apatite

This stunning bluey, purpley stone can help stimulate your clairs, especially clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience. Which Is why I love it so much as those are my most active clairs. It can help open up that wonderful throat chakra too, aiding the reader to be able to connect what their intuition is showing them and putting it into words.

8. Lapis Lazuli

A revered stone with deep connections to the Egyptian Goddess Isis. It is the stone of priestesses and priests. It can aid you in your reading to gain clarity while accessing deep universal wisdom. A wonderful stone for Tarot readers, as it not only helps us attune to our innate intuitive gifts, but it helps us stay detached from taking on our client’s stuff.

9. Selenite

If you use the Tarot to read people’s past lives, this is a wonderful crystal to have as it is key stone to help unlock past lives. It can also help you see possible futures as well. What a versatile stone! This is a perfect companion stone to help you focus while you are conducting readings.

10. Tiger Eye

A grounding and calming stone, which will aid you stay in your body and remain centered. Another stone that will aid you with your intuitive abilities and stimulate your third eye. This stone works a little like a Tarot reading; it can help bring together many little pieces to form a whole picture.

Ways you can use the crystals in your Tarot Practice

  • Wear jewellery that has the stones in them.
  • Have them in your pocket or even down your bra.
  • Place tumbled stones in your Tarot pouch.
  • Have a few pieces on your Tarot Reading table.
  • Use them to charge or cleanse a deck after they have been handled.
  • Meditate with the programmed stones before a reading to ground, open and center yourself.

This is not an exhaustive list. There are so many more stones we could talk about them all day. I may do another part in this series.

What are some of your favourite stones you use to enhance your Tarot readings?

Until Next week...

  1. Thank you so much for this list! I always use amethyst, citrine, and tiger eye with mine, and now you have me intrigued about some of the others, especially black tourmaline! I also really like using sodalite, since my strongest association with it is in terms of creativity/writing and it helps me focus on the storytelling aspect of tarot. If I’m reading for other people, or if my anxiety is high and I want to take it easy on myself as I read, I use rose quartz, too.

We love the same ones! I love citrine so much I had a mala made of it. Also garnet. Yes yes yes. Have a large palm size coming tomorrow to work with during the New Moon. I need a ring or pendant. Smoky quartz! Clear quartz! Selenite! Black tourmaline! Amethyst! All the yes. I love having the clear and white stones near when I do craft as well as the purples. Raise the vibration. I’m also deficient in fire—so I keep red jasper near. And how did I almost forget? I am a total fool for black obsidian. Among other things, it assists me in seeing truth, channeling, and being open to deity. My other favorites are fluorite and moonstone. I have a green moonstone I’m smitten with. ♥️

  3. I often use labradorite, since its known to help with a deeper understanding of spiritual consciousness. It’s linked to the third-eye chakra, which helps you open your mind to otherworldly realms. I also use desert rose stones, because it gives you clarity of mind and helps to guide you through the story of the tarot. It can also help boost your confidence as a tarot reader.

  4. Thanks so much for this list!! I’m new to tarot and to crystals and learning about the two together like this is a fantastic way for a beginner like me to get started!! I have a garnet bracelet along with a chakra/hematite bracelet along with every stone on this list and THEN SOME!! I’ve recently been drawn to the citrine for the happy happy joy joy vibe and have always loved a good smoky quartz for the protective vibe!! I’m still learning about the tarot and find that just keeping a clear quartz and amethyst around while studying has been extremely helpful with my focus. I also try to keep several stones from this list of these on my mini tarot table for protection (tourmaline, selenite) and to enhance my study time (amethyst, clear quartz, garnet, apatite, lapis for focusing) to help pull images and make connections between them and the cards. Thanks to the other comments I’ll be looking into those other stones to help me along like labradorite, desert rose, fluorite, red jasper, moonstone (personal favorite), sodalite and rose quartz.

  5. Jamie Shuebrook

I also like rose quartz, labradorite and moonstone. As for my deck pouches I sew them myself and embroider them incorporating stone chips or beads into the designs. I know it sounds OCD but I like putting my magik into the creation of their resting place.
