What is with all the Tarot Decks?!

A thought came to me today while I was writing the reviews for the two new decks that arrived this week and it was spurred on by a question that gets asked of me a lot, “why do you have so many decks?” I wonder if people would ask that of someone who collect stamps?

There are a few reasons that I could offer in response to that question, I like looking at the artists different interpretation of the cards and how that is translated into artwork, it is my joy to go through a new deck and see what the artist has come up with and how they want you to interoperate the cards, what they have added to the classic Rider-Waite, what they have changed or just plain taken out. I am a collector and like any collector we like adding to our collected works and I think I am a little addicted to the Tarot.

I guess there is really no real quantified reason for it, when I read for someone I read with the same few decks every time, I have only ever used five decks and I have been working with the Morgan Greer for nearly a year now.

I do swap and change the oracle decks all the time and allow Clients to pick whichever one of the oracle decks they are drawn too. I use the oracle decks at the end of a reading with but I feel that oracle decks don’t require the same amount of investment as Tarot does. You pick a card out of an oracle deck and look up the meaning in the book that goes with it, it is pretty straightforward.

With the tarot however, you have to have a relationship with, you have to know the cards and how they effect the interpretation of the cards around them. You are encouraged to meditate with the cards, take care in learning about the symbols; colours and other hidden gems in the cards, all in the endeavour to better understand this metaphysical and spiritual tool.

If I swapped decks all of the time I would feel like I was being unfaithful to the decks that I have done hundreds of readings with (a little silly I know but I can’t help it) not to mention that some of the wonderful creations that I have would require years to fully understand and work with them as their architecture are completely different. There are also decks in my collection that I would never read with, they are wonderful but I am not sure if I would ever get around to reading with it at all.

I guess an idea would be to spend a year with each of my decks and see if that would allow me to broaden my Tarot horizon…..

Oh and I am currently compiling a complete list of by Tarot Decks, I was just curious as to how many I actually have. The selected pictures in this entry are some of the decks I own, I am going to put up the list as soon as I have completed it.

Until Next time...
