Let’s face it Witches have gotten a lot of bad press when it comes to the portrayal of their appearance, abilities and whom they have dedicated their life to serving. As a Witch myself I am so glad that there are more and more positive Witches in books, television and movies.

So here is my own appreciation post to those who have created and become  these fantastic characters in books, TV Series and Movies.  The Witches below are listed in order of them appearing in my life.

Glinda – The Good Witch of the North – The Wizard of Oz

I was obsessed with Glinda when I was younger; I wanted her dress, her crown, her shoes and her magic bubble transportation abilities. Here was this pretty, good witch on screen helping out Dorothy and that one character changed my life. Literally.

Samantha Stephens and Endora – Bewitched

These Witchy women took that torch and held it up high for us all from 1964-1972 and I for one think this show had a huge influence on popular culture embracing the ‘Good Witch’ more and more rather than the old hag stereotype.  Yes Endora was a troublemaker but aren’t all mothers? Bewtiched was on TV most weekdays later in the afternoon and I used to watch it when I got home from school.

Sarah Bailey and the Bookshop Witch Lirio – The Craft

While this movie started a group of girls at my High School acting like the girls in the movie and I at the time finding Wicca on my own and trying not to let the world know about it. Sarah and Lirio were at least positive role models and the goth/punk/grunge look of the young coven sure did make this movie popular in 1996. It was at least explained that magic is magic it is all down to who uses it and for what whether it is good or bad. After all the girls didn’t start off all bad.

Sabrina – Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Who didn’t want a talking black cat after watching this series? I know I did. Another show with positive female role models and two Aunties raising a teenager.
Hermione, Luna, Ginny, all of the wonderful Witch women in – The Harry Potter Series

This is the most popular of the list I would imagine and just a wonderful series and world.  Words fail to describe how much I love the Harry Potter books and I enjoyed the movies immensely.  Hermione was smart, brave and loyal and she was able to shine with the other two main characters of the series. Luna who is beloved as well among fans was another great addition and Ginny became increasingly important as the series matured.

Not to mention the fantastic teachers and Molly Weasely. That line ‘Not my daughter you bitch!’ is really one of the best lines (You go Mrs Walters) and had the same effect as the similar protective statement Aliens line to the audience.  Yes there were evil witches like Bellatrix and Umbridge but again that world was so great in recognizing and explaining dark vs light and the intent and heart of people, muggle and magic a like.

Sally and Gillian Owens, Aunt Fraces and Aunt Jet – Practical Magic

This movie is one of my all time favorites and I have watched it more times than I can count. It was so helpful to be able to see this on the big screen when I was already practising The Craft. The messages of family and acceptance along with the fantastic performance of the Aunts makes these Witches so very awesome.

The Charmed Ones – Charmed

Oh this series. I am not ashamed to admit that I own this series on DVD and have watched it all of the way through more than once. These girls kicked ass for 8 seasons and was at the time (and still may be) the longest running TV Series with all FEMALE main characters. Yes it was hokey and fun but it was also really empowering.

Willow – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Willow didn’t come into her Witch powers until late season 2 and into season 3 and then in season 6 when she was the bad guy for a while there when her powers were out of control and being lead by her grief and want for revenge. Willow was an amazing Witch and her friends still loved and accepted her, the writers of the show didn’t run away from her character developing they embraced it and continued to let her evolve and grow. Probably my all time favorite television series and one that I have watched a number of times through.

Cassandra Nightingale – The Good Witch Movie Series

Movies in the series are – The Good Witch, The Good Witch’s Garden, The Good Witch’s Family, The Good Witch’s Charm and this year The Good Witch’s Destiny (goodness this was a popular series for ole Hallmark). I have only seen the first two and may have to hunt down the others. They are a little sickly sweet but they are also good fun. The character of Cassandra is great positive PR for Witches.

Bonnie Bennett – The Vampire Diaries

This stunning lady is the most powerful character in the series in the way of her abilities and that is pretty cool. I stopped watching the show mid way through season 3 but it was nice to see some more kick ass witches on screen.

This is my little list of positive Witches in pop culture. I am sure that there are many many more.  I am going to be tuning in to the Witches of East End this month to see if any of the Witches on that show are going to be a added favorite.

Tell me about your favourites?

Until Next week...
